What About PowerPoint?

There is no greater example of the maxim “Less is more!” than PowerPoint. Use fewer slides, and fewer words on each slide. The more you write, the less helpful the slides become for you and your listeners. A typical scenario is this: the first couple of slides are appropriately spare, but by slide three the bullet points have grown into complete sentences. Eventually, the sentences grow into whole paragraphs, and by the presentation’s conclusion, the slides are crammed with words from margin to margin.

Don’t project your first substantive slide until after you have begun your presentation, introduced yourself and your topic, and made a direct, personal connection with your audience. (The split focus demanded of PowerPoint—Should I watch the screen or the speaker?—inhibits this essential connection.) Of course, talk to your audience, not the laptop in front of you, or, heaven forbid, the screen behind you. This requires out-loud, on-your-feet practice in using the slides. Warning: just because your slides are legible on your computer doesn’t mean they will be legible when projected on a screen.

When we use PowerPoint, we have a presentation of ten slides for a one-hour lecture. We use the slides to show our topics, to assist the audience in memorizing them, and to illustrate a few physical poses. Here are four examples of our slides:
